As an indie developer, one of the most important parts of a
successful launch is the dreaded marketing campaigns. As an
artist first, being able to find others to help with that process is
a wonderful breath of fresh air. Twitch is one of those platforms
that can be hard to break into. The number of streamers
playing other indie games for exposure is staggering. Chasing
XP jumped into Twitch’s tumultuous waters and helped bring our games to a new audience. Streamers are important for so many reasons but two of the main for me are exposing bugs and
providing ideas that were out of view before. During this time,
I’ve gained new followers on my Twitch, Twitter, and an uptick in
Steam Wishlist adds.

The Indie Game market is saturated to say the very least and to get someone to play your game (let alone buy it) may prove harder than it seems, especially if your game is a bit strange like ours, Alpha Particle. So, to get people to play it, you need other people to play it first so that the aforementioned people may see why they would want to play the game. The egg or chicken, right? Chasing XP solved this problem for us by gathering streamers and getting them to play our game, and at the same time giving streamers the opportunity to grow as well. But it’s not as simple as that. By doing so it opens doors in all sorts of ways. Not only do these streamers play, but they have direct contact with us. This communication helps us better our game as they would often find improvements or bugs that we may have missed. We also have the opportunity to watch these streamers play, and in turn we can further adjust our game accordingly. I honestly feel that they are a dedicated bunch of folk that love Indie Games. And we are glad to be affiliated with them.

Our approach to indie game marketing is unique. We have spent a lot of time listening to developers and their fans to find the most successful recipe for each phase of a game’s life: –

    Building the hype is essential. We're talking about a bunch of wishlist adds, influencer chatter and gamers eager to grab your game.

  • Growth

    To grow, you'll need an engaged core fanbase, consistent new eyes on your game, and public relations/appearances to stay current.

    The indie developer/gamer relationship is like no other. You'll get feedback, critique and - above all - loyalty from your audience.

Any coverage on the Chasing XP website, podcast and YouTube is (and always will be) free of charge to all developers and publishers.

 

Every developer and publisher is different, and we will put together a costing that is appropriate to the level of marketing & exposure we provide. We only cover our costs in creating & managing viral social giveaways, Streamer Hub inclusion, or any other marketing that has a direct/indirect cost to us.

 

To give you a guide, however, packages range from $99 to $199.

The Streamer Hub is a project we started to help new indie developers and relatively small Twitch/YouTube streamers. You are able to provide license keys to streamers to increase your audience, receive feedback, and grow your profile.

 

We work with a large number of streamers who have varying numbers of followers (10 - 53,000). We also ensure the streamer has a highly engaged audience when they stream, and they interact with their viewers. 

 

Each streamer provides a streaming date and a URL so you can watch them play and see feedback LIVE. You receive this information via a PDF report.

 

When we distribute your license keys to the Streamer Hub, you are able to reach a very large audience very quickly.

 

Example:

  • 2D platformer game
  • Number of licenses provided: 100
  • Number of streamers: 60
  • Average number of viewers: 135
  • Total audience reach: 8100

While we provide reports on how many streamers will be streaming your game (and when), we also recommend important steps & analytics tools.

 

Example: -

We advise all developers to register and get their game on IGDB.com. This means that twitch will automatically list your game (including cover art). More info here.

 

Also, when your game is being streamed on Twitch, you will be able to track the number of viewers and overall popularity of your game with an online tool called TwitchTracker.

 

 

You will, of course, be able to see the increase in Wishlist adds, downloads, purchases and more using your chosen platform's analytics tools (Steam/Itch). You can also check the analytics on your social media using data from Twitter's analytics platform, for example.

This is entirely up to you.

We can facilitate giveaways on our YouTube videos, bundle them with other developers or any number of promotional strategies. Your account manager will, of course, discuss this with you during the process.

We will discuss this with you during the process, and recommend a quantity that is appropriate to the campaign.

We are very serious about protecting our developers.

 

Approval Process: All streamers have to prove they are the owner of a channel before we allow them to request license keys. We also perform a number of checks to ensure they have followers and viewers on their channel (though our threshold is low). As much as we strive to help smaller streamers grow their channel by collaborating with you, we also need to ensure each streamer is legitimate and genuine.

 

Limitations: Our platform only allows streamers to request ONE key at a time. We don't approve multiple key requests.

 

Bans: We will ban any streamer who does not adhere to our terms of use. Any attempts to circumvent our rules are also met with a ban. We are building a community of creators and developers who can truly help each other grow. Any person who is detrimental to our platform will no longer be permitted to take part.

We don't just distribute keys.

At Chasing XP, we understand that every developer is an individual. You will be assigned an account manager, and we will always communicate with you one to one.

We will first ensure we understand your game and your goals, and then we will put a package together with your guidance.

Your package will consist of the various platforms we have created, and will be tailor-made for you.

We cannot offer a "one size fits all" as this ultimately would not benefit you, or gain maximum exposure for your game.

 

Every package we put together has different elements that you choose. What benefits one developer may not benefit another.

That is not a question.

You may have noticed that we are quite transparent in our methods and motives.

 

This is mainly because (in our experience) it has given us a much faster & easier route to success. Not just for us, but also for the developers who work with us.

 

Our success is intrinsically linked to the success of the developers we work with. 

 

We, as a team, have a passion for indie games, and a desire to see every developer succeed. Any developer we've worked with will confirm this.
